Tips for Driving From Dusk Till Dawn

12-11-2019 by WebEditor Leave a Comment

Inevitably, a time will come that you need to make a long drive at night. Whether it’s returning to college or an early morning departure from the airport, driving in the wee hours helps you avoid traffic. Many people dislike driving after dark, but there are a few things you can do to make your journey more enjoyable. Here are several tips to keep you driving safe from dusk till dawn.

Table of Contents

  • Prepare Ahead of Time
  • Having the Proper Lighting
  • Driving Defensively
  • Safety First

Prepare Ahead of Time

Do yourself a favor and prepare as far ahead as you can. Gas up your car so you won’t need to stop. Put toll money where it can be easily reached and if you’re using a GPS, make sure it’s programmed. Find your phone charger and get it connected. If you’re expecting inclement weather, check that your car is stocked with an ice scraper, snow brush, jumper cables and emergency supplies.

Having the Proper Lighting

Obviously, lighting is essential for your trip but there are a few other things you can do. Make sure your dashboard lights are either dimmed for the drive, or on high if you’re worried about staying awake. You can also install emergency lighting to the rear of your vehicle. These lights provide a wide swath of illumination when you back up. You’ll be able to see everything within your vicinity to help you safely drive in reverse.

Driving Defensively

Be prepared to drive defensively. While this is a must-do anytime, night driving presents its own perils. Be aware of deer during the fall. Watch out for other drivers that may be sleepy or swerving. It only takes a couple of extra seconds to double-check before easing out onto a roadway. If you’re pulling an all-nighter, get out and take frequent breaks to avoid drowsiness.

Safety First

Nighttime driving can be a challenge but the key is to prepare well before you leave. Take the extra time necessary to ensure your safety and that of everyone else on the road.
