What You Didn’t Know About Truck Driving

04-08-2018 by WebEditor Leave a Comment

Truck drivers have a very important role, they are more than just transportation for goods. Think about the products on store shelves, almost all those items were brought by the freight industry. How about the ever-popular online orders? Those boxes often come in transit via truck drivers as well. The point is that without truck drivers there would be difficulties for consumers to get goods, stores to stay stocked, and construction projects to begin.

Roads Were Originally Built for Commerce

After the invention of the car, it was quickly discovered how motor vehicles would be ideal for making trade much easier. There was a big problem. Most cities did not have paved roads connecting them to each other. That meant that harsh dirt roads were the only option. The interstate system was created partially to ease this struggle to transport goods. Even today truckers are a constant presence on interstates and highways, they are careful to get DOT permits as needed in each state to comply with local laws.

The Freight Industry is Biggest Than You Think

Most people wouldn’t guess that there are approximately 3.5 million American truck drivers. If that number wasn’t impressive enough, consider that the freight industry employs about 8.9 million people in related jobs. Put in simple terms, trucking supports American jobs and positively contributes to the economy.

Trucking Companies Care About Their Carbon Footprint

Semi trucks have gotten a bad rap as contributors to pollution from their exhaust. That just isn’t true anymore. A large number of diesel trucks actually are considered to be clean of emissions having no negative effect on the environment. This is primarily due to more technology in engines and emission control advancements.

Even Pop Culture Loves Truckers

There have been many movies and songs that speak about beloved truckers. Some of the best-known movies that feature truckers are Black Dog, Smokey and the Bandit, Breaker! Breaker!, and Convoy. Truckers do a lot of driving obviously and during the time they listen to plenty of tunes to pass the time away. It makes perfect sense that the music industry would recognize them in songs like Roll on 18-Wheeler by Alabama and Papa Loved Mama by Garth Brooks. There are even more movies where semi-trucks are used in the plot.

Americans rely on truck drivers and they don’t even know it. These professionals are part of a huge industry that supports millions of jobs, keeps stores stocked, and online orders delivered. Highways and interstates were built to help commerce and trade between cities and states become much easier. Trucking companies have also been using clean-diesel engines significantly reducing emissions. There are so many positive aspects of trucking that pop culture has praised truckers over the years both in songs and movies. The freight industry contributes jobs, revenue, and goods to support the American economy.
